My dear son,
At 0545 hrs on this Remembrance Day, we began our daily run. At this early hour, the forest trails are in darkness so we reluctantly follow our "winter" route through the neighbourhoods. Strangely, for this time of the year, the early morning skies were clear, the mountains newly snow-capped, the constellation Orion beckoning, low in the sky, at the end of the driveway. In the darkness of this November morning, we remembered those long, almost interminable months that you were away...
During that time, on the other side of the world, you experienced horrors precious few of us can even begin to imagine, let alone bear such memories for the rest of our lives. Surely we cannot turn our backs on those whose lives are torn asunder - I know it is so complex. How easily we forget, or at the very least, take for granted, the freedom we enjoy from such danger. How small a sacrifice it will be to stand at the cenotaph this morning. How much more determined we must be to work for peace in this world.
We will remember...
